🔧 QX80 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your QX80’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) system. Replacing it restores airflow, helps reduce odors, and can improve AC performance—especially in dusty conditions.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

Assumption: glovebox-access cabin filter with a 2-piece filter set.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin.
  • 🛑 Work gently—glovebox and filter-door tabs are plastic and can snap.
  • 😷 If the old filter is dirty, wear a mask and avoid breathing dust.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool set
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter set - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 📦 Empty the glovebox so nothing falls out.
  • 💡 Have your flashlight ready—visibility is tight under the dash.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prep the glovebox

  • Open the glovebox fully and remove any contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glovebox for the small “damper” arm (a little support link that slows the door).

Step 2: Disconnect the glovebox damper arm

  • Use a trim removal tool set (a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches) to gently pop the damper arm off its peg.
  • Set the damper arm aside so it doesn’t get bent.

Step 3: Lower the glovebox door

  • With the glovebox open, press in on both sides of the glovebox “walls” using your hands to clear the stop tabs.
  • Let the glovebox swing downward slowly.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glovebox, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Use your Phillips screwdriver #2 if screws are present; otherwise, release the side tabs by hand and pull the cover off.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin filters

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Slide the first filter straight out. If your QX80 uses a 2-piece set, slide the second filter out right after the first.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe loose debris from the filter housing (do not push debris deeper inside).

Step 6: Install the new cabin filters

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter(s).
  • Install the new filter(s) in the same orientation as the old ones (match the airflow direction you observed).
  • Tip: If it won’t slide, don’t force it.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door and glovebox

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by snapping tabs in place and/or tightening with a Phillips screwdriver #2 until snug (do not overtighten).
  • Lift the glovebox back up and push the sides inward again to get past the stop tabs.
  • Reconnect the damper arm using the trim removal tool set (gentle pressure until it clicks on).

✅ After Repair

  • 🔁 Start the engine and run the blower on medium-high for 30 seconds.
  • 🌬️ Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no new rattles from the glovebox area.
  • 👃 If there’s a mild “new filter” smell, it should fade quickly.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $120-$200 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $20-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $100-$155 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
