🔧 Q50 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Q50’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it restores airflow, reduces odors, and helps your defroster and A/C work better.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/keep it away from the car.
  • ⚠️ Work gently around the glove box area to avoid breaking plastic clips.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Flashlight
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Keep a flashlight handy; it’s tight.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the glove box area

  • Open the glove box and remove any items inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little shock-like piece that slows the glove box). A damper arm is a small link that controls how fast the glove box drops.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the damper arm off its pin (or unclip it, depending on style).
  • Use a shop towel to protect nearby trim if needed.

Step 3: Lower the glove box fully

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box (left and right walls) with your hands to clear the side stops.
  • Let the glove box swing down slowly.
  • If your Q50 has a small lower trim panel interfering, remove it using a plastic trim removal tool and/or Phillips screwdriver #2 (some cars have a screw, some are clips only).

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover on the HVAC housing.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand, or use a plastic trim removal tool to help if it’s stubborn.
  • Set the cover aside somewhere clean.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand (use nitrile gloves if it’s dusty).
  • Use a flashlight to check inside the slot for leaves/debris.
  • Wipe loose dust at the opening with a shop towel (don’t shove the towel deep inside).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install the filter in the same direction the old one came out (match the arrow direction you observed).
  • Slide it in straight so the edges don’t fold.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand until it clicks into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and pop the side stops back past their tabs (push the sides inward again if needed).
  • Reconnect the damper arm by hand until it snaps back on the pin.
  • If you removed any trim panel(s), reinstall them using a Phillips screwdriver #2 and/or pressing clips in by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and run the blower fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm the glove box area stays quiet.
  • If there’s a whistle, re-seat the filter.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $90-$180 (parts + labor)

You Save: $75-$135 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
