šŸ”§ Transit Connect - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Transit Connect’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the heater and A/C. When it’s clogged, airflow gets weak and you may notice musty odors or more dust inside.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • šŸ›‘ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧤 Wear gloves—HVAC housings can have sharp plastic edges.
  • šŸ‘“ Wear safety glasses—dust/debris can fall when the filter door opens.
  • šŸ”Œ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Torx T20 driver
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🧼 Clear out the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • 🧭 Set HVAC to OFF before starting.
  • šŸ“ Assumption: your Transit Connect uses the behind-glove-box cabin filter access (common on this model).

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and lower the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • If a damper strap is on the right side, pop it off carefully using a small flat-blade screwdriver. Go slow so the clip doesn’t snap.
  • Push the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the built-in stops, then let the glove box swing down.

Step 2: Remove any trim panel if equipped

  • If a small trim panel blocks access near the glove box opening, pry it gently using a trim removal tool (plastic).
  • If your version uses fasteners instead of clips, remove them using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet or a Torx T20 driver.
  • For any small trim screws you remove, reinstall them to Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter access door

  • Use a flashlight to look behind the glove box area for a rectangular HVAC access cover (the cabin filter door).
  • Release the locking tabs by hand, or gently with a small flat-blade screwdriver if they’re tight.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out with your hands while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Keep it level so trapped leaves and dust don’t spill into the blower housing.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the arrow shown on the HVAC housing (airflow direction). Wrong direction can reduce airflow.
  • Slide it fully in so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.

Step 6: Reinstall the access door and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter door until the tabs click into place by hand.
  • Reinstall any trim panel removed (clips press in by hand; screws use 7mm socket or Torx T20 driver).
  • Reattach the glove box damper strap if equipped.
  • Swing the glove box back up and push the sides inward to pass the stops, then close it.
  • For any small trim screws you removed, tighten to Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸŒ¬ļø Start the engine and run the fan on medium, then high, to confirm strong airflow.
  • šŸ‘ƒ Switch between fresh air and recirculate to check for odd noises (a whistle can mean the filter isn’t seated flat).
  • 🧾 If you had musty odor, run A/C for a few minutes to help clear stale air.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
