🔧 Rogue - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

This job replaces the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents into your Rogue. Over time, it clogs with dust and pollen, making the fan weak and air musty.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20–30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • 🔹 Turn the ignition off and remove the key before starting.
  • 🔹 Do not start the fan or A/C while the filter is removed.
  • 🔹 Work gently around plastic parts in the glove box to avoid cracking clips.
  • 🔹 If you have dust allergies, wear a dust mask and gloves.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 🔹Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • 🔹Flathead screwdriver (small)
  • 🔹Plastic trim removal tool (straight type)
  • 🔹Flashlight
  • 🔹Work gloves
  • 🔹Dust mask
  • 🔹Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • 🔹Cabin air filter (Rogue, with A/C) - Qty: 1
  • 🔹Interior cleaner or HVAC disinfectant spray - Qty: 1 (optional)

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🔹 Park the Rogue on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition off.
  • 🔹 Open the passenger door fully for more room to work.
  • 🔹 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you lower it.
  • 🔹 No battery disconnect or scan tool is required for this job.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lower the glove box

  • 🔹 Sit in the passenger seat and open the glove box normally.
  • 🔹 On the right side of the glove box you’ll see a small arm that slows the glove box opening. This is the damper.
  • 🔹 Use a flathead screwdriver (small) or your fingers to gently pop the damper arm off its peg on the glove box.
  • 🔹 Now press inward on both sides of the glove box near the back edges so the side stops clear the dash opening, then let the glove box swing down fully.
  • 🔹 Some Rogues may allow the glove box to hang; if needed, you can gently lift it off the lower hinges by hand. Support it with one hand
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step.

Step 2: Locate the cabin filter door

  • 🔹 Behind the lowered glove box, you’ll see the plastic HVAC box (big black plastic housing).
  • 🔹 Use a flashlight to look for a rectangular cover with small side clips—this is the cabin air filter door, roughly in the center area behind the glove box.
  • 🔹 Clear any wiring or harnesses gently out of your way by hand; do not pull hard.
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter door

  • 🔹 On the filter door, there are usually two small tabs, one on each side or one on one side and a hinge on the other.
  • 🔹 Use your fingers or a plastic trim removal tool (straight type) to gently squeeze or pry the tab(s) inward to release the door.
  • 🔹 Pull the door straight off and set it aside where it won’t get lost.
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step (snap-on cover).

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • 🔹 Look at how the old filter is sitting and note the airflow direction arrow printed on its side (usually pointing down in the Rogue).
  • 🔹 Grab the exposed edge of the filter and slowly pull it straight out by hand.
  • 🔹 If it catches on the opening, gently wiggle it or bend it slightly in the middle while pulling out.
  • 🔹 Keep the filter level to avoid dumping dust into the blower housing.
  • 🔹 Tap the old filter into a trash bag outside
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step.

Step 5: Clean the filter area (optional but recommended)

  • 🔹 Use your flashlight to look inside the filter slot for leaves or debris.
  • 🔹 If you see loose debris, gently remove it by hand or with a small vacuum nozzle if available.
  • 🔹 If you are using interior cleaner or HVAC disinfectant spray, lightly spray into the housing opening following the product’s instructions.
  • 🔹 Do not soak the area; avoid spraying electrical connectors nearby.
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • 🔹 Take the new cabin air filter out of its packaging.
  • 🔹 Find the printed arrow that shows airflow direction; on the Rogue, the arrow should point down when installed.
  • 🔹 With the arrow pointing down, slide the new filter into the slot the same way the old one came out.
  • 🔹 Gently push it in until it sits fully inside and flush with the housing edges. Do not crush or fold the filter excessively.
  • 🔹 If it resists, check orientation before forcing
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step.

Step 7: Reinstall the cabin filter door

  • 🔹 Position the filter door back over the opening, lining up the tabs and any hinges.
  • 🔹 Press the door firmly until you hear or feel the clips snap into place.
  • 🔹 Check the edges all around to be sure the cover is fully seated with no gaps.
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step (clips only).

Step 8: Reattach and close the glove box

  • 🔹 If you removed the glove box from the hinges, set the lower hinge pivots back into their slots by hand.
  • 🔹 Lift the glove box up and press inward on the sides again so the side stops go back behind the dash opening, then slowly release so it rests in the normal open position.
  • 🔹 Reattach the damper arm on the right side by hand or with the help of a flathead screwdriver (small), snapping it back onto its peg.
  • 🔹 Open and close the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly and doesn’t bind.
  • 🔹 Torque specs: Not applicable for this step (no bolts normally removed).

✅ After Repair

  • 🔹 Start the engine and turn on the blower fan at different speeds. Check that airflow feels normal and there are no unusual noises from behind the glove box.
  • 🔹 Turn on A/C and heat to be sure everything works as before.
  • 🔹 If you used disinfectant spray, you may notice a temporary odor that should fade after a short time.
  • 🔹 Note your mileage or date; plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months, or more often in dusty conditions.
