🔧 Soul - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Soul’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—use gentle pressure to avoid breaking the glove box stops.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Trim clip tool
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Have a trash bag ready for debris.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside so it doesn’t fall out.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the sides for the glove box stop points.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Push in on the glove box sides with your hands so the stops clear the dash opening, then let the glove box swing down.
  • If your Soul has a small damper arm (a little strap on the right side that slows the glove box), gently pop it off using a trim clip tool.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular filter cover on the HVAC case.
  • Press the tabs and pull the cover off by hand. If a screw is present on your cover, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Slide the filter straight out. Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust.
  • Use a flashlight to check the filter housing for leaves/debris and remove any by hand.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction the old one came out (airflow should point down toward the blower on the Soul’s HVAC box).
  • Slide it in without bending the filter. If it binds, pull out and realign.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by pushing it on until the tabs click.
  • If your cover used a screw, install it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver and snug it (do not overtighten).
  • Reconnect the glove box damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in again so the stops pass the opening, then close it normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the car and turn the fan to medium/high to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculate to ensure normal operation.
  • If you smell dust, run the fan 1-2 minutes.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

You Save: $48-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
