🔧 Cherokee - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air coming through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps reduce dust, odors, and weak airflow, and it can prevent the blower motor from working harder than it should.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-25 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key (or keep the fob away) before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic clips—use gentle pressure to avoid breaking the glove box stops.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim removal tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Cherokee on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the climate system OFF, then turn the ignition OFF.
  • Move any items out of the glove box so nothing falls when it drops down.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove manuals/contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little support strap that slows the glove box). Not all trims have the same style.

Step 2: Release the glove box to drop it down

  • If your glove box has a damper arm on the right side, gently pop it off using a plastic trim removal tool. (A damper is a small arm that controls how fast the glove box opens.)
  • With both hands, push the glove box sides inward to clear the built-in “stops,” then let the glove box swing down.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the cabin filter access door behind the glove box.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Use a flashlight to see the tabs on the filter cover.
  • Press the tabs and remove the cover by hand. If it’s tight, use a plastic trim removal tool gently to start it.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Slide the old filter straight out by hand, keeping it level so debris doesn’t spill.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves or dirt inside the filter slot and pull any loose debris out carefully by hand (with gloves on).

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install the new filter in the same direction the old one came out (airflow arrow should match the direction of airflow marked on the housing, if shown).
  • Slide it in until it sits flat and fully seated—don’t bend or crush it.

Step 6: Reinstall the filter cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by hand until the tabs click in place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops, then let it return to normal position.
  • If removed, reattach the damper arm by pressing it back on by hand (use a flashlight to line it up).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan on medium and high to confirm smooth airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation and listen for any rattles (a mis-seated cover/filter can make noise).
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes—new filters can shift odors quickly as they start trapping debris.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
