🔧 Sierra 1500 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

On your Sierra 1500, the cabin air filter (if equipped) sits behind the glove box and cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents. Some 2014 Sierra 1500 trucks were built without the filter door from the factory, so I’ll show both the “filter door present” path and the “retrofit needed” path.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-1.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the glove box area.
  • ⚠️ If you use a utility knife to add the filter door, cut slowly and away from your hands.
  • ⚠️ Keep debris out of the blower opening (don’t drop leaves/dirt inside).

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool (plastic pry tool)
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Utility knife with new blade
  • Shop vacuum with crevice tool

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1
  • Cabin air filter access door / cover kit (if not equipped) - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Open the passenger door for more working room and lighting.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing spills when it drops down.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Drop the glove box down

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic pry tool) to gently help the glove box sides flex inward so the stops can pass the opening.
  • Let the glove box swing down slowly.

Step 2: Find the cabin filter area behind the glove box

  • Use a flashlight to look at the HVAC case directly behind where the glove box was.
  • You’re looking for a rectangular access door/cover (this is the “filter door”).

Step 3A: If the filter door IS present (quick replacement)

  • Release the door tabs using a small flathead screwdriver (a small flat screwdriver helps push tabs without breaking them).
  • Remove the access door by hand.
  • Slide the old filter out carefully.
  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice tool to clean loose debris around the opening.
  • Install the new filter in the same direction as the airflow arrow printed on the filter frame.
  • Reinstall the access door by hand until the tabs click.

Step 3B: If the filter door is NOT present (retrofit needed)

  • Confirm you see a flat “blank” section where a door would normally be (no removable cover).
  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Using a utility knife with new blade, carefully cut the outlined/marked door area on the HVAC case (some housings have faint guide lines).
  • Cut shallow passes; don’t force the blade.
  • Remove the cut-out plastic piece by hand.
  • Use a shop vacuum with crevice tool to remove plastic bits and dust before installing the filter.
  • Slide the new cabin filter in, following the airflow arrow direction on the filter.
  • Install the new access door / cover from the Cabin air filter access door / cover kit until it clicks into place.

Step 4: Reinstall the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up into position.
  • Flex the sides inward again so the glove box stops pass the opening, then close it.
  • If any lower hush panels were removed on your truck, reinstall them using a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet, tightening snug (GM typically does not publish a torque spec for these interior trim screws).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on medium for 30 seconds.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation and listen for rubbing noises (a mis-seated filter can whistle).
  • Verify airflow from the vents feels normal.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $90-$220 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$70 (parts only, depends on whether you need the cover kit)

You Save: $75-$150 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-1.0 hours.
