🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Your Silverado uses a cabin air filter behind the glove box. Replacing it helps keep dust, pollen, and odors out of the cabin, and it can improve airflow from the vents if the old filter is clogged.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Keep the glove box supported so it does not drop suddenly.
  • Do not force the filter door or retainers; the plastic tabs can break.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the glove box and empty it completely.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and support the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • Use your hands to lower it slowly so you can see the stops on both sides.
  • Go slowly to avoid cracking plastic.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use a trim panel tool to gently press the side stops inward if needed.
  • Let the glove box swing down farther until it hangs open.
  • Do not pry hard on the hinges or side tabs.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Look behind the glove box for the rectangular cabin filter door.
  • Use your fingers or a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the retaining tabs.
  • Remove the cover and set it aside.

Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the old filter straight out.
  • Pay attention to the airflow arrow on the filter before removing it.
  • If it is packed with dirt or leaves, hold it level so debris does not fall into the housing.

Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Use the new cabin air filter and match the airflow arrow to the direction marked on the housing.
  • Slide the filter in fully and make sure it sits flat.
  • Check the arrow before pushing it in.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and re-engage the side stops.
  • Close the glove box and make sure it opens and closes normally.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the blower on high.
  • Check for strong airflow from the vents.
  • Listen for any rattles from the glove box area.
  • If airflow is still weak, inspect the filter orientation and confirm it is fully seated.
