š Before You Begin
- Open the passenger door for better access to the glove box area.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Take a quick photo before removal.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prep the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove any contents by hand.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side for the glove box damper (a small arm/strap that slows the glove box so it doesnāt drop fast).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side, gently unclip the damper from the glove box using a plastic trim removal tool.
- If itās tight, use the trim tool to pry lightly at the clipādo not twist hard.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push inward on both sides of the glove box (by hand) to clear the side stops.
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular filter cover.
- Release the tabs by hand; if needed, use a plastic trim removal tool to help the tabs disengage.
- Remove the cover and set it aside.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
- Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris in the filter housing and pull it out by hand.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one (typically AIR FLOW DOWN in the Foresterās filter slot).
- Slide it in evenly so it doesnāt fold or bunch up.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover by hand until the tabs click in.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward (by hand) to pass the side stops back into position.
- Reconnect the damper clip on the right side by hand; use the plastic trim removal tool only if you need gentle leverage.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on high for 10-20 seconds.
- Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box area.
- If you smell dust, run fresh air mode.
