🔧 CX-5 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your CX-5’s cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the HVAC (heat/AC) vents. Replacing it helps reduce dust/pollen and can improve airflow, especially if the fan feels weak or there’s a musty smell.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working near the glove box and HVAC.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can snap in cold weather.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your CX-5 on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door for more working room.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the cabin filter area
- Open the glove box fully.
- Use a flashlight to look behind the glove box for the cabin filter cover area.
Step 2: Release the glove box stops
- With both hands, gently push the glove box sides inward to clear the built-in “stops” (the little plastic blocks that prevent it from dropping).
- If a side trim edge is in your way, gently guide it using a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) (a plastic pry tool that helps prevent scratches).
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Locate the rectangular filter access door behind the glove box.
- Use your fingers (or the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) if needed) to press the cover tabs and pull the cover off.
Step 4: Remove the old cabin filter
- Put on clean nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
- Slide the old filter straight out.
- Keep it level as you remove it so dust and leaves don’t dump into the blower case.
- Tip: A trash bag underneath helps catch debris.
Step 5: Install the new cabin filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the new cabin air filter.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (airflow arrow must match the housing direction).
- Slide it in smoothly; don’t bend or crush the filter.
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter cover and push until the tabs click into place.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again so the stops pass into position.
- Close and open the glove box once to confirm it moves normally.
✅ After Repair
- Start your CX-5 and run the fan at medium speed for 30 seconds.
- Confirm airflow feels normal and there are no rattles from behind the glove box.
- If there was a musty odor, run A/C for a few minutes to verify improvement.
