🔧 Santa Fe - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
On your Santa Fe, the cabin air filter sits behind the glove box and cleans the air entering the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and can improve A/C performance—especially if it’s dusty or clogged.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic glove box parts—tabs can snap if bent too far.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves

- Small flashlight

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the front passenger door for better access to the glove box.
- Set your HVAC to OFF using the dash controls.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Open the glove box fully.
- Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the damper arm (a small strap/arm that slows the glove box).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- With the glove box open, gently unhook the damper arm from the glove box (it usually pops off a small pin).
- Use nitrile gloves for grip if it’s dusty.
- Tip: Pull straight off—don’t twist hard.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops
- On both sides of the glove box, you’ll see soft “stops” that prevent it from dropping down.
- Use your hands (no tools needed) to gently press the sides of the glove box inward so the stops clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box rotate downward slowly.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing.
- Use your fingers to press the side tabs and remove the cover.
- Use a small flashlight if the tabs are hard to see.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out of the housing.
- Keep it level so debris doesn’t spill into the blower area.
- Use safety glasses in case dust drops.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it with the arrow pointing in the direction of airflow (toward the blower). If the filter says “AIR FLOW” with an arrow, match the arrow direction to how the old one was installed.
- Slide it in until it seats fully—don’t bend it.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the filter housing cover and make sure the tabs click into place.
- Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again to get the stops back past the dash opening.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its pin.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and turn the fan to medium. Confirm airflow is strong and there are no rattles.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation and listen for any unusual noise (a loose cover can cause a buzz).
- If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes on fresh air to help clear the ducts.
