🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Camry’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the heater and A/C. When it gets dirty, airflow can drop and you may notice musty smells or more dust inside the car.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Park on level ground and shift to P.
- ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and keep the key/fob away from the vehicle so it can’t “wake up” while your hands are inside the dash area.
- ⚠️ Do not force plastic tabs—if something won’t move, re-check the clip/tabs first.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this filter replacement.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park the Camry on a flat surface and make sure the ignition is OFF.
- Open the passenger door and clear items out of the glove box.
- Take a quick photo of the filter direction arrows.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box fully and remove manuals/loose items by hand.
- Use a flashlight so you can see the right-side glove box arm clearly.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- On the right side of the glove box, find the small “damper” arm (a little slow-down strut that keeps the glove box from dropping fast).
- Use a plastic trim removal tool (non-marring) to gently pry the damper arm off its pin (or unhook it by hand if it releases easily).
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push the glove box sides inward with your hands to clear the stop tabs.
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly once the stops clear.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box you’ll see the cabin filter housing.
- Use your hand (or a plastic trim removal tool (non-marring) if needed) to press the cover tabs and pull the cover straight off.
Step 5: Slide out the filter tray and old filter
- Pull the filter tray straight out by hand.
- Remove the old cabin filter from the tray by hand.
- If leaves fall out, that’s normal.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter (often marked “AIR FLOW”).
- Install the filter in the tray in the same direction as the old one (typical is arrow pointing down, but follow the arrow and housing markings).
- Slide the tray back into the housing by hand until fully seated.
Step 7: Reinstall the housing cover
- Align the cover and push it on by hand until the tabs click into place.
- If it won’t click, pull it back off and re-align—don’t force it.
Step 8: Reinstall the glove box
- Lift the glove box back up.
- Push the glove box sides inward again to pass the stop tabs, then release.
- Reconnect the right-side damper arm by hand (it should snap back onto the pin).
âś… After Repair
- Start the Camry and run the blower on medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Check for normal airflow and make sure there are no rattles from the glove box area.
- If there’s a whistle, the filter may be flipped.
