šŸ”§ Civic - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Civic’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the heater/AC vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic tabs—if it won’t move, recheck the clips.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the glove box sides and back area.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Press the glove box side walls inward with your hands to clear the ā€œstopsā€ (the little plastic bumps that prevent it from dropping all the way).
  • Lower the glove box gently once the stops clear. Go slow so you don’t crack it.

Step 3: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side of the glove box, locate the damper arm (a small piece that slows the glove box as it opens).
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the damper arm off its pin/clip, then let the glove box hang down.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the lowered glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Press the tabs on the housing cover by hand (use the flashlight to see them clearly) and pull the cover straight off.

Step 5: Slide out the old cabin filter

  • Pull the filter tray/filter straight toward you by hand.
  • Wear nitrile gloves—this filter can be dusty.

Step 6: Install the new cabin filter (correct direction)

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it with the airflow arrow pointing down (toward the floor), matching the housing’s airflow direction marking if present.
  • Slide the filter/tray fully in until it seats evenly.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter housing cover by hand until both tabs click.
  • Reconnect the damper arm using the plastic trim removal tool as needed to align it, then snap it back onto the pin/clip.
  • Push the glove box sides inward again and raise it past the stops, then release.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the HVAC fan on medium to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to verify everything sounds normal behind the glove box.
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the fan for a few minutes with A/C off to dry the ducts.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost
