🔧 Focus - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air going through your A/C and heater before it enters the cabin. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen down.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5–1.0 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the glove box.
  • ⚠️ Let the blower motor stop completely before opening the filter housing.
  • ⚠️ Use eye protection—dust and leaves can fall out when the filter is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 3" socket extension
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Trim panel removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Take a quick photo before disassembly.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Clear the glove box area

  • Open the glove box and remove any items inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look underneath the glove box so you can see the panels and fasteners.

Step 2: Remove the passenger-side lower trim panel (if equipped)

  • From the passenger footwell, use a trim panel removal tool to gently pry the lower trim panel/knee panel loose.
  • If there are screws, remove them using a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and 3" extension.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) during reassembly.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Locate the glove box “damper” on the right side (a small arm/strap that slows the glove box). If it’s connected, carefully unhook it by hand.
  • Gently push in on both sides of the glove box to release the side stops, then let the glove box swing down.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Find the rectangular cabin filter cover behind the glove box.
  • Remove the cover fasteners using either:
  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver if your cover uses Torx screws, or use a 7mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet if it uses small hex-head screws.
  • Pull the cover off and set it aside.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs) during reassembly.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out.
  • Keep it level as you pull it to avoid dumping debris.
  • If it’s stuck, wiggle gently—don’t force.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the side of the new filter.
  • Install it with the airflow arrow pointing downward (toward the floor) on your Focus.
  • Slide it in fully so it seats evenly and doesn’t fold.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover, glove box, and trim

  • Reinstall the filter cover and tighten fasteners with a Torx T20 screwdriver or 7mm socket.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
  • Lift the glove box back up, re-engage the side stops, and reconnect the damper strap/arm by hand.
  • Reinstall any lower trim panel screws using a 7mm socket, then snap the panel back in place.
  • Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).

âś… After Repair

  • Start your Focus and run the fan on medium for 30–60 seconds.
  • Switch between A/C and heat modes to confirm airflow is strong and there are no rattles.
  • If you hear a ticking noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck the cover and filter alignment.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $90–$170 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15–$35 (parts only)

You Save: $55–$155 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5–1.0 hours.
