šŸ”§ Focus - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Focus’s cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the HVAC vents (A/C and heat). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition fully OFF.
  • āš ļø Keep fingers clear of glove box hinges while lowering it.
  • āš ļø Do not force plastic tabs—if it won’t move, re-check for hidden screws.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" ratchet
  • Small flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • šŸ…æļø Move the passenger seat back for working room.
  • 🧹 Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • šŸ”¦ Have your small flashlight ready to spot the filter cover and any screws.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open up the passenger-side work area

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a little plastic arm that slows the glove box as it opens).

Step 2: Lower the glove box

  • If equipped, disconnect the glove box damper: use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop the damper arm off its pin.
  • Push the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing down.
  • Go slow—plastic bends, but it can crack.

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter access cover

  • With the glove box lowered, look behind it toward the center area for a rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Use a small flashlight to check whether the cover is held by clips or screws.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover (choose the version you have)

  • Clip-style cover: Use a plastic trim removal tool to press the locking tabs, then pull the cover off.
  • Screw-style cover: Remove screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver or 7mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet, then remove the cover.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out slowly using your hands (wear nitrile gloves).
  • If it’s tight, wiggle it gently—don’t yank hard.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (match the arrow direction).
  • Slide it fully into the housing so it sits flat and doesn’t fold.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by snapping the clips in place, or reinstall the screws using a Torx T20 screwdriver or 7mm socket with a 1/4" ratchet.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward to pass the stops back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.

āœ… After Repair

  • šŸ” Start your Focus and turn the fan to medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
  • šŸ‘ƒ Check for whistling noises (usually means the filter isn’t seated flat).
  • 🧾 If you track maintenance, note the date/mileage for the next change.
