🔧 A6 - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A6’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it restores airflow, reduces dust/pollen inside the car, and can help with musty odors.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic trim to avoid breaking clips.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool set
  • Torx T20 screwdriver
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Move the front passenger seat all the way back to give yourself space.
  • Have a trash bag ready for dust.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the passenger footwell area

  • Open the front passenger door and kneel by the passenger footwell.
  • Use a flashlight to look under the glovebox area.

Step 2: Remove the passenger-side lower under-dash panel

  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the lower panel under the glovebox.
  • Use a trim removal tool set to gently pry the panel down and release the clips.
  • If there’s a small light connector on the panel, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the lock tab, then unplug it.
  • Pull straight down, not sideways.

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter cover

  • With the panel removed, use the flashlight to find a rectangular HVAC filter housing near the passenger footwell.
  • You’ll see a cover with clips and/or small fasteners.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • If equipped with screws, remove them using a Torx T20 screwdriver.
  • If equipped with locking tabs, press the tabs by hand or gently with a small flat-blade screwdriver, then pull the cover off.
  • Don’t force it—tabs can snap.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves.
  • Slide the old filter straight out. If it’s tight, wiggle it slightly while pulling.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust into the blower area.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the new filter frame (it may say “Air Flow”).
  • Install the filter in the same direction as the old one. The arrow must match the airflow direction marked on the housing (if marked).
  • Slide it fully in until it seats evenly all the way around.
  • If it buckles, pull out and re-seat.

Step 7: Reinstall the filter cover

  • Reinstall the cover and make sure all tabs click into place.
  • If screws were removed, install them with a Torx T20 screwdriver until snug.

Step 8: Reinstall the lower under-dash panel

  • Reconnect any unplugged light connector by hand (you should feel it click).
  • Align the panel clips and press it back into place.
  • Reinstall screws using the Torx T20 screwdriver.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Turn on A/C and heat briefly to ensure normal operation.
  • If you notice a whistling noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck the cover and filter position.
