🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps improve airflow and reduces dust and odors inside your Camry.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—warm interior plastics are less likely to crack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat plastic trim tool
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items inside.
  • Use nitrile gloves to keep dust off your hands.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • On the right side of the glove box, find the small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap that slows the door).
  • Use the small flat plastic trim tool to gently pop the damper off its pin.
  • Go slow—this clip is easy to snap.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box to clear the side stops.
  • Use your hands (no tools) and let the glove box swing down toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing cover.
  • Use the flashlight to see the locking tabs.
  • Press the tabs by hand and pull the cover off.

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin filter straight out.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves/dust into the blower area.

Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter.
  • Install it with the arrow pointing DOWN (toward the floor) for this Camry’s filter housing.
  • Slide the filter fully in so it sits flat and doesn’t bunch up.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the housing cover by hand until the tabs click in.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in again to pass the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin by hand.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and turn the fan to high for 10–15 seconds to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to ensure no odd noises from the glove box area.
  • If you hear rubbing or clicking, re-check that the filter is fully seated and the cover is clipped in.
