🔧 Explorer - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your Explorer’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps reduce dust/pollen and can improve airflow if the old filter is clogged.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
- ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on trim panels to avoid cracking clips.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Move the passenger seat back to give yourself working room.
- Have a small trash bag ready.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the passenger-side lower dash area
- Open the passenger door and use a flashlight to look under/around the glove box.
- If a lower trim panel is in the way, remove any retaining screws using a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
- Use a trim removal tool (a plastic pry tool used to pop clips without scratching) to gently release clips and pull the panel down/out.
Step 2: Drop the glove box (if needed)
- Open the glove box.
- On the right side, disconnect the glove box damper arm if equipped (it’s the small slow-down arm). Use a trim removal tool to gently pop it off the peg.
- Squeeze the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing downward.
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Behind the glove box area, locate the rectangular cabin filter access door/cover on the HVAC case.
- Release the cover tabs by hand (or gently with the trim removal tool if tight) and remove the cover.
Step 4: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the filter straight out.
- Keep it level as you pull it to avoid dumping leaves/dust.
- Note the airflow arrow before removal.
Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter
- Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm the same size.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one, following the airflow arrow (typically points toward the rear of the vehicle, into the HVAC box).
- Make sure the filter seats fully and isn’t folded or pinched.
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and reassemble
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover by pressing it in until the tabs click.
- Lift the glove box back up and re-engage the side stops (squeeze sides inward again if needed).
- Reconnect the damper arm if you removed it.
- Reinstall any lower trim panel and tighten screws using a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet.
✅ After Repair
- Start your Explorer and run the fan on medium-high for 30 seconds.
- Check that airflow sounds normal (no fluttering/whistling).
- Confirm the glove box opens/closes smoothly and the damper works normally.
