📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and switch the ignition OFF.
- 📦 Empty the glovebox so nothing falls out while it’s lowered.
- 💡 Have a flashlight ready so you can see the filter door clearly.
- Trim panel tool = plastic pry tool for panels.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and lower the glovebox
- Open the glovebox fully.
- Use your hands to gently push in on both sides of the glovebox to clear the side “stops,” then let the glovebox swing down.
- If equipped with a small glovebox “damper” strap on the right side, use a trim panel tool to gently pop it off the glovebox pin.
Step 2: Locate the cabin filter access door
- Look behind the lowered glovebox area toward the passenger-side dash.
- Use a flashlight to find the rectangular cabin filter cover/door.
Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover
- Release the cover tabs by hand. If tight, gently assist with a trim panel tool.
- If your cover uses fasteners, remove them with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet or a Phillips screwdriver (use the tool that matches the fastener head).
Step 4: Remove the old filter
- Pull the old filter straight out.
- Wear nitrile gloves—old filters can be dusty.
- Note the airflow direction arrow on the old filter frame before removal.
Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter
- Match the new filter’s airflow arrow to the same direction as the old one.
- Slide the new filter into the housing until it seats flat (don’t bend or crush it).
- If it fights you, it’s likely flipped.
Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glovebox
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover and snap the tabs fully into place.
- If fasteners were removed, reinstall them with a 7mm socket and 1/4" drive ratchet or Phillips screwdriver until snug (do not overtighten).
- Reconnect the glovebox damper strap (if equipped) by pressing it back onto the pin by hand.
- Lift the glovebox up, push in the sides to clear the stops again, and close it.
✅ After Repair
- 🧊 Start the engine and run the A/C and heat to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- 👃 If there was an odor issue, run fresh air (not recirculate) for a few minutes.
- 🔎 Recheck the glovebox opens/closes smoothly and the damper works (if equipped).
