🔧 Explorer - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter traps dust, pollen, and debris before air enters the cabin. On your Explorer, it sits behind the glove box and can be replaced without removing major trim pieces. This is a simple job and a good first DIY repair.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Open the glove box slowly so it does not drop hard.
  • No battery disconnect is required.
  • Work gently around the glove box stops.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim panel tool
  • Flashlight
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or fob from the vehicle.
  • Open the front passenger door for better access.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the glove box

  • Use your hand to open the glove box fully.
  • Empty the glove box first so it does not swing down with weight.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use a trim panel tool or your fingers to gently squeeze the sides of the glove box inward.
  • This lets the glove box drop farther down so you can reach the filter housing.
  • Do not force the plastic.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Use a trim panel tool to release the cover on the HVAC housing behind the glove box.
  • Pull the cover straight off once the clips release.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Use your hand to slide the old cabin air filter out of the housing.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the old filter before removing it.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Use your hand to slide the new cabin air filter into place.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow points the same direction as the old filter.
  • Arrow direction matters.

Step 6: Reinstall the access cover and glove box

  • Use your hand to snap the filter cover back into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and release the side walls so it seats normally.
  • Check that the glove box opens and closes smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the blower fan on and check airflow from the vents.
  • Listen for any rattles behind the glove box.
  • If airflow seems weak, recheck the filter seating and airflow direction.
