- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out during removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the passenger footwell area
- Open the passenger door and kneel next to the passenger footwell.
- Use a flashlight to locate the glove box lower area and side trim.
Step 2: Remove the right-side trim panel (if equipped)
- On the passenger side of the center console/dash area, gently pry off the small trim panel using a trim removal tool set.
- Tip: Pry at the edges, not the middle.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Open the glove box.
- Press the glove box sides inward with your hands to clear the stops, then let it swing down.
- If a damper strap is present on the right side, gently unclip it by hand so the glove box can drop farther.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the cabin air filter housing cover.
- If your cover uses screws, remove them using a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" 1/4" drive extension.
- If your cover uses clips, release the tabs by hand (use the trim removal tool set only if needed).
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out of the housing with your hands (wear nitrile gloves).
- Keep the filter level as you remove it to avoid dumping debris.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install the new filter in the same direction as the old one (airflow arrow should match the housing’s airflow direction marking, if present).
- Slide it in evenly so it seats flat and does not buckle.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the cabin filter cover by snapping in the clips or reinstalling screws using the 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" 1/4" drive extension.
- Reconnect the glove box damper strap (if removed) by hand.
- Push the glove box sides inward again and lift it back past the stops to close normally.
- Reinstall the trim panel using the trim removal tool set and press until clips click in.
âś… After Repair
- Start your Explorer and run the blower fan on medium, then high.
- Listen for any clicking/whistling that could mean the filter isn’t seated flat.
- Confirm airflow feels stronger and odors are reduced.
