🔧 Insight - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Insight’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the A/C and heater vents. When it’s dirty, you may notice weak airflow, bad smells, or more dust inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car fully OFF before you start (no READY light).
  • ⚠️ Do not force plastic tabs—if it won’t move, re-check the release points.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Trim clip tool (specialty)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the car is OFF.
  • Move the front passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and “drop” the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully by hand.
  • Use your hands to press the left and right sides of the glove box inward so the built-in “stops” clear the dashboard opening.
  • Let the glove box swing down slowly.
  • Tip: Press one side at a time if tight.

Step 2: Unhook the glove box damper (if equipped)

  • On the right side, look for a small “damper” arm (a little plastic shock/strap that slows the glove box).
  • Use the trim clip tool (specialty) to gently pop the damper end off its pin, or use your fingers if it slides off easily.
  • Tip: Don’t pry hard—light pressure only.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Pinch the cover tabs (usually one on each side) with your fingers and pull the cover straight off.
  • Use a flashlight if the tabs are hard to see.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin filter straight out.
  • Keep it level so debris doesn’t dump into the blower housing.
  • With nitrile gloves on, check the housing for leaves/dirt and remove any loose debris by hand.

Step 5: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it with the arrow pointing DOWN (toward the floor), which matches the airflow direction on the Insight’s HVAC box.
  • Slide the filter in until it seats fully and sits flat (not bent).

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover and press until both tabs click.
  • Reattach the glove box damper (right side) by pushing it back onto the pin.
  • Lift the glove box up and again press the sides inward to pass the stops back into place.

âś… After Repair

  • Start the car and run the blower fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to make sure the door operation sounds normal.
  • If you still have musty odor, consider cleaning the HVAC intake area at the base of the windshield.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,500-₹3,500 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹600-₹1,800 (parts only)

You Save: ₹900-₹1,700 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹2,000/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
