🔧 Outback - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC vents (A/C and heat). Replacing it helps improve airflow and can reduce dust and odors inside your Outback.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force the glove box; the plastic tabs can crack.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and make sure the HVAC fan is OFF.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself more room.
  • Have a trash bag ready for debris.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove anything inside so nothing falls out.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little slow-down strap).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Using a trim removal tool (plastic), gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the glove box.
  • The damper is the small arm that makes the glove box open slowly.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops and lower the glove box

  • With both hands, push the glove box sides inward to clear the side “stops” (the plastic tabs that keep it from dropping all the way).
  • Let the glove box rotate downward slowly.
  • Push evenly—don’t twist the box.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing door.
  • Press the side tabs and pull the door straight off by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if needed).

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out of the housing.
  • Use nitrile gloves if the filter is dusty.
  • If leaves/debris are inside the housing, gently pull them out by hand (avoid pushing debris deeper).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install the filter with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) on your Outback.
  • Slide it in straight so it doesn’t buckle or crush.

Step 7: Reinstall the access door

  • Reinstall the housing door and press until the tabs click into place.
  • If there are screws on your door version, reinstall them using a Phillips screwdriver #2 (snug only; do not overtighten).

Step 8: Reattach and close the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to get the stops past the dash opening.
  • Reconnect the damper arm to its pin (press it on by hand; use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if necessary).
  • Close the glove box.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan on medium for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air/recirculate and listen for any unusual noises behind the glove box.
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes; the new filter may take a short time to “air out.”

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$115 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
