🔧 Outback - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

📋 Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and make sure the HVAC fan is OFF.
- Move the passenger seat back to give yourself more room.
- Have a trash bag ready for debris.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove anything inside so nothing falls out.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a little slow-down strap).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- Using a trim removal tool (plastic), gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the glove box.
- The damper is the small arm that makes the glove box open slowly.
Step 3: Release the glove box stops and lower the glove box
- With both hands, push the glove box sides inward to clear the side “stops” (the plastic tabs that keep it from dropping all the way).
- Let the glove box rotate downward slowly.
- Push evenly—don’t twist the box.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the lowered glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing door.
- Press the side tabs and pull the door straight off by hand (use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if needed).
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Slide the old filter straight out of the housing.
- Use nitrile gloves if the filter is dusty.
- If leaves/debris are inside the housing, gently pull them out by hand (avoid pushing debris deeper).
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- Look for the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install the filter with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) on your Outback.
- Slide it in straight so it doesn’t buckle or crush.
Step 7: Reinstall the access door
- Reinstall the housing door and press until the tabs click into place.
- If there are screws on your door version, reinstall them using a Phillips screwdriver #2 (snug only; do not overtighten).
Step 8: Reattach and close the glove box
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to get the stops past the dash opening.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its pin (press it on by hand; use the trim removal tool (plastic) only if necessary).
- Close the glove box.
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the fan on medium for 30 seconds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
- Switch between fresh air/recirculate and listen for any unusual noises behind the glove box.
- If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes; the new filter may take a short time to “air out.”
