🔧 Cabin Air Filter - Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming into the vents. On your Outback, it sits behind the glove box and is quick to replace with basic hand tools. A fresh filter can improve airflow and help reduce dust and odors inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off before starting.
  • Keep the glove box supported so it does not drop suddenly.
  • Use care around the glove box damper arm; it is easy to snap.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flashlight
  • Mechanic gloves

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the fob away from the vehicle.
  • Open the glove box and clear out all contents first.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove everything inside.
  • Use your hands to lower the glove box carefully.

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Push in on both sides of the glove box with your hands.
  • This lets the glove box drop down farther so you can reach the filter door.
  • Work slowly to avoid breaking tabs.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Locate the filter access cover behind the glove box.
  • Use your hands to unclip the cover and remove it.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin air filter out by hand.
  • Pay attention to the airflow arrow on the filter before removing it.

Step 5: Install the new filter

  • Use your hands to slide the new filter into the housing.
  • Match the airflow arrow on the filter with the direction marked on the housing.
  • Arrow direction matters.

Step 6: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by hand until it clicks into place.
  • Lift the glove box back into position and snap the side stops back in.
  • Make sure the damper arm is reattached if it came loose.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and run the fan on high.
  • Check for strong airflow from the vents.
  • Make sure the glove box opens and closes normally.
  • If airflow is still weak, confirm the filter is seated correctly.
