🔧 Equinox - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
You’ll be replacing the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents inside your Equinox. It sits behind the glove box and is easy to access with a few simple steps.

- 🛑 Make sure the blower fan and A/C are switched off.
- 🧤 Wear gloves if you have dust allergies, as the old filter can be dirty.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park the Equinox on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 📦 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when you lower it.
- 💡 Open all doors or windows slightly if you’re sensitive to dust.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and prepare the glove box
- Use your hand to fully open the glove box on the passenger side.
- Remove all items from the glove box so you can move it freely.
- Keep small items in a bag so nothing gets lost.
Step 2: Release the glove box side stops
- Look along the left and right inside edges of the glove box; you’ll see plastic “stops” that prevent it from dropping down.
- With both hands, gently squeeze the two outer sides of the glove box inward until the stops clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box swing down carefully; support it with one hand so it doesn’t drop hard.
- You usually do not need tools for this step.
Step 3: Disconnect the glove box damper (if equipped)
- On many Equinox models, there is a small “arm” or cord on the right side of the glove box called a damper (it slows how the glove box opens).
- If you see this small arm, gently unclip it by hand. If it’s tight, use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the clip off the pin.
- Let the damper hang down out of the way.
Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter access door
- Behind the lowered glove box, look straight ahead at the plastic HVAC (air box) housing.
- You will see a rectangular plastic cover with tabs along the top or sides; this is the cabin air filter door.
- Use the flashlight to clearly see the edges and clips.
Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter door
- On your Equinox, the door is usually held by spring clips, not screws.
- Press in on the plastic tabs with your fingers to release the cover. If it’s stubborn, use the flathead screwdriver gently to help lift the tab.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside somewhere clean.
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Grasp the edge of the old filter with your fingers and pull it straight out toward you.
- Note the direction of the airflow arrows or the way the pleats face before removing. Take a quick photo as a reminder.
- Be prepared for some dust or leaves to fall out; wear your safety glasses.
Step 7: Clean the filter housing area
- Use the small shop vacuum to gently vacuum any leaves, dust, or debris inside the filter slot and around the housing.
- Do not push the vacuum nozzle too far inside; just clean the visible area.
- If needed, wipe nearby plastic surfaces with an interior wipe or mild cleaner.
Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter
- Look on the side of the new filter for an “AIRFLOW” arrow.
- On the Equinox, the arrow should point downward (toward the floor) because air flows from top to bottom through the filter.
- Slide the new filter into the slot the same way the old one came out, with the arrow direction matched correctly.
- Make sure the filter is seated fully and evenly; no edges should be bent or sticking out.
Step 9: Reinstall the cabin air filter door
- Position the plastic cover back over the opening, making sure the tabs line up with the slots.
- Push the cover firmly until all clips snap back into place by hand.
- No torque specs are needed here; just ensure it’s fully latched and not loose.
Step 10: Reattach and close the glove box
- If you removed the damper arm, clip it back onto its pin by hand.
- Lift the glove box up and gently squeeze the sides inward again so the side stops can move back past the opening.
- Release the sides so the stops rest in their normal position and the glove box opens and closes smoothly.
- Return your items to the glove box.
✅ After Repair
- 🔄 Start the engine and turn on the A/C or heater fan at different speeds. Check that airflow feels normal and there are no unusual noises from the dash.
- 👃 Notice if the air smells fresher; that’s a sign the new filter is working.
- 📝 Make a note of the date and odometer reading; plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months, or more often in dusty conditions.
