🔧 Equinox - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the vents into your Equinox. Replacing it keeps the heater and A/C airflow strong and reduces dust and odors inside the cabin.

- 🛑 Keep the engine off and the key out of the ignition while you work.
- 🧤 Wear gloves if you have dust allergies; the old filter can be dirty.

📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔑 Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- 🧹 Empty the glove box so nothing falls out when it drops down.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box fully.
- Remove all items so you can see the sides and back clearly.
- Use the LED flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small arm (the damper).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- The damper arm is a small plastic piece that slows how the glove box opens and closes.
- Gently pull the damper arm straight off the pin on the glove box side. Use your fingers, or if tight, carefully use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to pry it off.
- Pull slowly to avoid breaking the plastic.
Step 3: Lower the glove box
- On both sides of the glove box you’ll see plastic stops that touch the dash opening.
- With one hand on each side, gently push the sides of the glove box inward so the stops clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box rotate down and hang, giving you access to the area behind it.
Step 4: Locate the cabin air filter cover
- Behind the lowered glove box, use the LED flashlight to find a rectangular plastic door in the HVAC housing (the black plastic box).
- This door is the cabin air filter access cover; it usually has small clips or tabs on each side.
Step 5: Remove the cabin air filter cover
- Press in on the side tabs of the cover with your fingers to release them.
- If a tab is stubborn, gently help it with the plastic trim removal tool (specialty), prying just enough to unhook it.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
Step 6: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Note which way the arrow on the old filter is pointing (usually shows “AIR FLOW” downward).
- Grab the edge of the filter and slide it straight out. It may bend slightly; that’s okay.
- Wear mechanic’s gloves if the filter is very dirty or dusty.
Step 7: Clean the filter housing area (optional but recommended)
- Use a cloth or interior cleaning wipes to wipe away leaves or dust around the filter opening.
- Do not push debris deeper into the housing.
Step 8: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the arrow on the new filter; it should match the direction of the old one (typically pointing down for “AIR FLOW” in your Equinox).
- Slide the new filter straight into the slot, keeping it flat and fully seated.
- If it jams, back out and re-align it.
Step 9: Reinstall the cabin air filter cover
- Position the cover over the opening, lining up the tabs with their slots.
- Press the cover in until both side tabs click securely into place.
Step 10: Reinstall and close the glove box
- Lift the glove box back toward its normal position.
- Push the sides of the glove box inward again so the side stops pass inside the dash opening, then release them.
- Reconnect the damper arm by pushing it back onto its pin by hand.
- Open and close the glove box a few times to be sure it moves smoothly.
Step 11: Put your items back
- Return the owner’s manual and any other items to the glove box.
- Don’t overpack; it can stress the hinges.
✅ After Repair
- 🌬️ Start the engine and turn on the fan at different speeds. Check that air flows well from the vents.
- 👃 Switch between fresh air and recirculation modes and confirm there are no unusual smells.
- 🗓️ Plan to replace the cabin filter about once a year, or more often in dusty areas.
