šŸ”§ Equinox - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heat pull air through the cabin air filter. When it gets dirty, you may notice weak airflow, musty smells, or more dust inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • 🧤 Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working around the glove box area.
  • 🧯 Don’t force plastic tabs—trim parts can crack if bent too far.
  • 😷 If the old filter is very dusty, wear a mask and avoid shaking it inside the cabin.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move any items out of the glove box so nothing falls behind the dash.
  • Set HVAC to OFF (fan off) so loose dust doesn’t get blown around.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove all contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side for the glove box ā€œdamperā€ (a small arm that slows the door).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to gently pry the damper arm off its pin (go slow).
  • Tip: Support the glove box door with your other hand.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops

  • On the left and right side of the glove box opening, there are plastic ā€œstopsā€ that keep it from dropping down.
  • Use a trim removal tool to gently push the glove box sides inward so the stops can pass the dash opening.
  • Let the glove box swing down toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Use a trim removal tool (or your fingers) to release the cover tabs, then pull the cover off.

Step 5: Pull out the old cabin air filter

  • Wear work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Slide the old filter straight out. If it catches, wiggle slightly—don’t yank.
  • Use the flashlight to check the housing for leaves/debris and remove any by hand.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (the arrow must match the housing airflow direction).
  • Slide the filter in evenly so it doesn’t buckle.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward (use the trim removal tool) so the stops go back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm using the small flat-blade screwdriver to guide it onto the pin if needed.
  • Close the glove box.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start your A/C and set the fan to medium-high. Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no new noises.
  • Sniff test: a light ā€œnew filterā€ smell is normal; a strong musty smell usually means debris in the housing.
  • Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months (more often in dusty/pollen-heavy areas).

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
