🔧 LaCrosse - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Replacing the cabin air filter keeps dust, pollen, and odors out of the air you breathe inside your LaCrosse. A clogged filter can reduce A/C performance and cause weak airflow from the vents.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.6 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working around the glove box area.
  • ⚠️ Do not force plastic panels; use gentle pressure to avoid breaking clips.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool (specialty)
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to create working room.
  • Have a trash bag ready; old filters usually drop dust/leaves.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.
  • Use flashlight to look along both side walls for the glove box “stops” (the little plastic tabs that keep it from dropping all the way down).

Step 2: Release the glove box stops

  • Use your hands to gently push the glove box sides inward so the stops clear the dash opening.
  • If a side is tight, use a plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to gently help the stop slip past. (A trim tool is a plastic pry tool that won’t scratch interior panels.)
  • Let the glove box swing down slowly.

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter access door

  • With the glove box dropped, use the flashlight to look directly behind it.
  • Find the rectangular filter cover/door on the HVAC case (it usually has small locking tabs).

Step 4: Remove the filter cover

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tab(s) on the cover.
  • If needed, use the plastic trim removal tool (specialty) to gently assist, then pull the cover straight off.
  • Go slow—tabs can snap if twisted.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Slide the old filter out carefully. Keep it level to avoid dumping debris.
  • Use the flashlight to check for leaves/dust inside the filter slot and remove loose debris by hand (with gloves).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)

  • Look for an “AIR FLOW” arrow on the side of the new filter.
  • Install the filter in the same orientation as the old one (airflow arrow direction must match). The arrow typically points toward the blower motor (toward the rear of the car), but match what you removed.
  • Slide it in until it seats fully and sits flat (don’t bend or crush it).

Step 7: Reinstall the filter cover

  • Align the cover and press it back on until the tab(s) click.
  • Give it a gentle tug to confirm it’s locked.

Step 8: Reposition and close the glove box

  • Lift the glove box back up.
  • Push the sides inward again to pass the stops back into place.
  • Close the glove box and make sure it opens/closes smoothly.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and turn the fan to medium/high.
  • Check that airflow is stronger and there are no odd noises (a ticking sound can mean the filter isn’t seated).
  • If you notice musty odor, run A/C on fresh air for a few minutes to clear the system.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$150 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$110 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.6 hours.
