šŸ”§ Tucson - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Tucson’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the HVAC (heat/AC) system. When it’s dirty, you may notice weak airflow, musty smells, or more dust inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF before working under the dash.
  • āš ļø Avoid breathing dust/debris when removing the old filter.
  • āš ļø Do not force the glove box; the plastic tabs can snap.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim tool

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glove box so items don’t fall out.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove any contents.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the ā€œdamperā€ (a small arm that slows the glove box). Damper = the slow-down strap/arm.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • On the right side, carefully pop the damper arm off its pin using a plastic trim tool.
  • If your damper uses a small screw/clip instead, remove it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops so it drops down

  • With both hands, gently push the glove box sides inward to clear the built-in ā€œstops.ā€
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the glove box you’ll see the cabin filter housing cover.
  • Press the side tabs and pull the cover off by hand (use the flashlight to see the tab locations).

Step 5: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the old cabin filter straight out while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Keep it level so debris doesn’t dump into the housing.

Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (the arrow must match airflow direction shown on the housing/filter). Use the flashlight if you can’t read the markings.
  • Make sure the filter seats fully and isn’t folded or pinched.

Step 7: Reinstall cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter housing cover by hand until the tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm (press it back onto the pin) using a plastic trim tool if needed.
  • If a fastener was removed, reinstall it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only; do not overtighten).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on high for 30 seconds.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm normal airflow and no rattles.
  • If you hear ticking/leaves, the housing may have debris—recheck the filter is seated flat.
