šŸ”§ Civic - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through the heater/AC vents. When it gets dirty, you may notice weak airflow, musty smells, or more dust inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic tabs—older interior plastics can crack.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight
  • Plastic trim tool set (specialty)

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move any items out of the glove box so they don’t fall out.
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can see the filter tray clearly.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for a small ā€œdamperā€ arm (a little strut that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side, gently pop the damper arm off its pin using a plastic trim tool set (specialty).
  • Tip: Pry gently from the outside edge.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Squeeze the glove box side walls inward with your hands to clear the two stop tabs.
  • Let the glove box swing down toward the floor slowly.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter door

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular filter access door.
  • Press the side tabs and pull the door straight off. Use a plastic trim tool set (specialty) only if needed.

Step 5: Slide out the old filter tray and filter

  • Pull the filter tray straight out with your hands.
  • Remove the old filter from the tray while keeping it level (so debris doesn’t spill).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Put the new cabin air filter into the tray.
  • Look for the airflow arrow on the filter. Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) on your Civic.
  • Slide the tray back in until fully seated.

Step 7: Reinstall the filter door and glove box

  • Reinstall the access door by aligning it and pressing until the tabs click in.
  • Lift the glove box back up and squeeze the sides in again to get the stops past the dash opening.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan on high for 30 seconds.
  • Check for normal airflow and make sure there are no rattles behind the glove box.
  • If you still have a musty smell, consider running the A/C for a few minutes and checking for moisture in the cabin.
