How to Replace the Cabin Air Filter on a 2009-2020 Dodge Journey (Glove Box Access) (Engine: V6 3.6L)
Step-by-step instructions, required tools and parts, fitment check, and retrofit options if no filter door for 2009, 2010
š§ Journey - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
On many Journey trims, the cabin air filter is either located behind the glove box or the vehicle may not be equipped with one from the factory. Youāll first check for the cabin filter access door on the HVAC case; if itās there, replacement is quick.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.75 hours
Assumption: Your Journey may be factory-equipped OR may require a retrofit kit.
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the dash.
- ā ļø Do not force plastic trim; it cracks easily in cold temperatures.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is not required for a basic cabin filter swap.
š§ Required Tools

š Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Open the passenger door and move the passenger seat back for space.
- Empty the glove box so nothing falls out while itās lowered.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lower the glove box
- Open the glove box fully.
- Use a trim removal tool to gently push the glove box sides inward so the rubber stops can clear the dash opening.
- Let the glove box swing downward slowly.
- If thereās a small ādamperā strap on the right side, unclip it using a small pick tool. (A damper is the little strap that slows the glove box from dropping.)
Step 2: Check for the cabin filter access door
- Use a flashlight and look behind the lowered glove box at the HVAC housing (the black plastic air box).
- Look for a rectangular cover/door with tabs or small screwsāthis is the cabin filter access.
Step 3A: If the access door is present, remove the old filter
- Remove the access door:
- If it has tabs, release them by hand or with a small pick tool.
- If it has screws, remove them with a Phillips screwdriver or Torx T20 driver (whichever fits).
- Slide the old cabin filter straight out.
- Tip: Pull slowly to avoid dumping debris.
Step 4A: Install the new filter (access door present)
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter.
- Install it in the same direction as the old one (airflow arrow typically points down toward the blower motor).
- Reinstall the access door by hand, then snug screws (if equipped) using a Phillips screwdriver or Torx T20 driver. Torque to hand-snug only (small screws strip easily).
Step 3B: If there is NO access door, your Journey is likely not factory-equipped
- This is common on some Journey configurations: the HVAC case may not have a service door for a cabin filter.
- At this point, you have two safe choices:
- Stop here (no cabin filter replacement is possible without modification).
- Install a cabin air filter retrofit kit (this requires cutting an opening in the HVAC housing and is a modification).
- Important: Iām not listing cutting steps here because itās irreversible and varies by kit; follow the retrofit kitās template and instructions exactly.
Step 5: Reinstall the glove box
- Reattach the damper strap (if you removed it) by hand; use a small pick tool only if needed.
- Lift the glove box back into place and push the sides inward so the stops pass the dash opening.
- Close the glove box and confirm it opens/closes smoothly.
ā After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower fan on high for 30 seconds.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation and listen for abnormal noises (a whistling sound can mean the filter isnāt seated).
- If thereās a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes to help dry the evaporator area.
