🔧 Forester - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust and pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working near the passenger airbag area.
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs—push, then pull gently to avoid cracking the glove box parts.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

- Have a trash bag ready for leaves/dust.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and empty the glove box
- Open the glove box and remove any items so nothing falls out.
- Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (the little arm that slows the glove box from dropping).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- On the right side, gently pop the damper arm off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool.
- Work slowly—this clip is easy to snap.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the side “stops” (the molded bumps that prevent it from falling).
- Let the glove box swing down toward the floor.
- If a screw/strap is present on your setup, remove it using a Phillips #2 screwdriver.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover
- Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
- Release the tabs by hand or with a plastic trim removal tool, then pull the cover straight off.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- Pull the filter straight out of the housing using nitrile gloves.
- Use a flashlight to check the housing for leaves and debris; wipe it clean if needed.
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter (correct direction)
- Look for the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it so the arrow points down (toward the floor) for your Forester.
- Slide the filter in evenly—don’t bend or crush it.
Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box
- Reinstall the access cover and press until the tabs click in.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again so the stops pass the opening.
- Reconnect the damper arm to its pin by pressing it back on by hand (use the plastic trim removal tool only if needed).
- If you removed a fastener, reinstall it with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only; no torque spec needed for this plastic fastener).
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and run the blower on medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
- Switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm the fan sound is normal (no rubbing/whistling).
- If you still get a musty smell, consider cleaning the evaporator case (separate service).
