šŸ”§ Forester - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heater pull air through the cabin air filter first. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces musty smells, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and keep the key away from the car while working.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic tabs—warm cabin plastics can still crack if pried hard.
  • āš ļø Battery disconnect is not required.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Open the passenger door for better access to the glove box area.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Take a quick photo before removal.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and prep the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove any contents by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side for the glove box damper (a small arm/strap that slows the glove box so it doesn’t drop fast).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • On the right side, gently unclip the damper from the glove box using a plastic trim removal tool.
  • If it’s tight, use the trim tool to pry lightly at the clip—do not twist hard.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push inward on both sides of the glove box (by hand) to clear the side stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular filter cover.
  • Release the tabs by hand; if needed, use a plastic trim removal tool to help the tabs disengage.
  • Remove the cover and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out by hand while wearing nitrile gloves.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris in the filter housing and pull it out by hand.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (typically AIR FLOW DOWN in the Forester’s filter slot).
  • Slide it in evenly so it doesn’t fold or bunch up.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by hand until the tabs click in.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward (by hand) to pass the side stops back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper clip on the right side by hand; use the plastic trim removal tool only if you need gentle leverage.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on high for 10-20 seconds.
  • Confirm airflow is stronger and there are no rattles from the glove box area.
  • If you smell dust, run fresh air mode.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,200-₹3,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹500-₹1,800 (parts only)

You Save: ₹700-₹1,200 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
