🔧 Forester - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air going through your A/C and heater. When it’s dirty, airflow drops and you may notice musty smells or more dust inside the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Work gently around glove box panels to avoid breaking plastic clips.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back to give yourself space.
  • Have a trash bag ready for leaves/dust.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a slow-open strap).
  • The damper is what makes it open smoothly.

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper

  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pry the damper arm off its pin on the glove box (pop it off carefully).
  • If your damper uses a small screw/clip instead, use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove it.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • With the glove box still open, press in on both glove box side walls using your hands to clear the built-in stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward slowly until it hangs fully open.
  • Go slow so you don’t crack the hinges.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Behind the glove box you’ll see a rectangular filter door/cover.
  • Use your fingers or a plastic trim removal tool set to release the side tabs and pull the cover off.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out.
  • Wear nitrile gloves and keep the filter level to avoid dumping debris.
  • Use a flashlight to check the slot for leaves, then remove loose debris by hand (with gloves).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the arrow indicates (typically “DOWN” toward the blower on this setup).
  • Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover and press until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and press the sides in again to pass the stops back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pushing it back onto the pin (or reinstall with a Phillips #2 screwdriver if yours uses a screw/clip).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan at all speeds to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
  • Turn on A/C for 1-2 minutes and make sure there’s no whistling (a sign the filter isn’t seated).
  • Replace about every 12 months or 15k miles.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$120 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
