šŸ”§ Escape - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.3-0.7 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
  • āš ļø Be gentle around the passenger-side dash area; don’t pull on any wiring.
  • āš ļø No battery disconnect is required for this job.
  • āš ļø If you see yellow connectors (airbag wiring), do not unplug them.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Flashlight
  • Trim removal tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Confirm your Escape is equipped with a cabin filter door

  • Use a flashlight to look under/behind the glove box area on the passenger side.
  • You’re looking for a small rectangular access cover/door on the HVAC housing (usually held by clips or a screw).
  • If there’s no access door, skip to Step 8.

Step 2: Lower the glove box

  • Open the glove box.
  • If there’s a small damper strap/arm on the right side, use a trim removal tool to gently pop it off its pin.
  • Squeeze the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stops, then let the glove box swing downward.

Step 3: Locate the cabin filter access cover

  • Use a flashlight and look directly behind the lowered glove box.
  • Find the cabin filter cover on the HVAC box (a plastic door/cover).

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • If the cover uses a screw, remove it with a Phillips screwdriver.
  • If the cover uses clips, release them using a trim removal tool (gently, so you don’t snap the tabs).
  • Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Wear work gloves and pull the filter straight out.
  • Note the airflow direction arrow printed on the filter frame.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping debris.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one to confirm the same size.
  • Slide the new filter in the same direction as the old one (match the airflow arrow).
  • Make sure it seats fully and isn’t folded or jammed.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and raise the glove box

  • Reinstall the access cover by snapping the clips back in place, or tighten the screw with a Phillips screwdriver.
  • Lift the glove box back up, squeeze the sides inward to pass the stops, and close it.
  • Reattach the damper strap/arm (if equipped) by pressing it back onto the pin by hand or using a trim removal tool gently.

Step 8: If there is no cabin filter access door

  • Some Escapes were not built with a serviceable cabin air filter from the factory.
  • Use a flashlight to confirm there is no filter slot/door behind the glove box.
  • In that case, there is no standard ā€œreplaceable cabin filterā€ procedure unless a retrofit kit has been installed.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on high for 30 seconds.
  • Check for normal airflow from the vents and listen for any rattles (a sign the cover isn’t seated).
  • If you notice a musty smell, run A/C for a few minutes; it may clear as the new filter settles.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.7 hours.
