🔧 Highlander - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before working around the glove box.

- 💡 A cabin air filter is the small rectangular filter that cleans air for the heater and A/C system.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and Empty the Glove Box
- Use your hands to open the glove box fully.
- Remove all items from inside the glove box.
- Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box.
- Keep screws and papers away.
Step 2: Release the Glove Box Damper
- Use your hands to find the small damper arm on the right side of the glove box.
- The damper is a small plastic arm that slows the glove box as it opens.
- Gently slide or pop the damper arm off the glove box pin by hand.
- Do not pull hard; it only needs light pressure.
Step 3: Lower the Glove Box
- Use both hands to press inward on the left and right sides of the glove box.
- This lets the glove box stops clear the dashboard opening.
- Slowly lower the glove box down until you can see the cabin filter cover behind it.
- Press both sides evenly.
Step 4: Remove the Cabin Filter Cover
- Use your fingers to squeeze the tabs on the cabin filter cover.
- Pull the cover straight off and set it aside.
- Use a flashlight to check the direction arrow on the old filter before removing it.
Step 5: Remove the Old Cabin Air Filter
- Use your fingers to slide the old cabin air filter straight out.
- Hold it level so leaves and dust do not spill into the blower housing.
- The blower housing is the plastic box that holds the fan for your heater and A/C.
- Dispose of the old filter.
Step 6: Install the New Cabin Air Filter
- Use your hands to slide the new cabin air filter into the slot.
- Match the airflow arrow direction to the marking on the filter housing or the old filter orientation.
- On most Toyota cabin filters, the airflow arrow points downward when installed.
- Make sure the filter sits flat and does not fold at the edges.
- Do not crush the filter pleats.
Step 7: Reinstall the Filter Cover
- Use your hands to align the cabin filter cover with the opening.
- Push the cover into place until the tabs click securely.
- Gently tug the cover by hand to confirm it is locked in.
Step 8: Reinstall the Glove Box
- Use both hands to raise the glove box back toward its normal position.
- Press the sides inward slightly so the glove box stops move back past the dashboard opening.
- Reconnect the glove box damper arm by pushing it back onto its pin by hand.
- Open and close the glove box once to confirm smooth movement.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Start your Highlander and turn the blower fan on low, medium, and high.
- ✅ Check that air comes from the vents normally.
- ✅ Listen for unusual rattling, which could mean the filter cover is not fully clipped in.
- ✅ If airflow is weak, recheck that the filter is seated flat and facing the correct direction.
- ✅ Replace the cabin air filter about every 12 months or 12,000-15,000 miles, sooner in dusty areas.
