šŸ”§ Highlander - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Highlander’s cabin air filter cleans the air going into the A/C and heater. Replacing it restores airflow, reduces musty smells, and helps keep dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn ignition OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin before starting.
  • āš ļø Don’t force the glove box; plastic tabs can snap if bent too far.
  • āš ļø If you use a trim tool, use light pressure to avoid marks.

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Turn the ignition OFF and make sure the blower fan is OFF.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself room.
  • Empty the glove box first.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove everything inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look for the small ā€œdamperā€ arm on the right side (it’s a small soft-open link that controls how the glove box drops).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper (right side)

  • Gently pry the damper arm off its pin using a plastic trim removal tool or small flathead screwdriver.
  • Go slow—this clip is plastic and should pop off without much force.

Step 3: Release the glove box stops and lower the glove box

  • With both hands, push the left and right sides of the glove box inward to clear the ā€œstops.ā€
  • Let the glove box rotate downward toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box, find the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Press the locking tabs and remove the cover by hand; use the flashlight if needed to see the tabs clearly.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out of the slot by hand.
  • Note the airflow arrow direction printed on the filter (usually ā€œAIR FLOWā€ and an arrow).

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Slide the new cabin air filter into the housing in the same orientation as the old one.
  • Make sure the airflow arrow matches the vehicle’s direction marking (or matches how the old filter sat).
  • If it buckles, pull it out and re-seat it.

Step 7: Reinstall cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the housing cover by hand until it clicks.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to pass the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm onto its pin on the right side by hand (it should snap on).

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the vehicle and turn the blower fan to medium/high to confirm strong airflow.
  • Cycle between fresh air and recirculation to confirm normal operation.
  • If you hear a fluttering noise, the filter may not be seated flat—recheck it.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹1,200-₹3,000 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: ₹600-₹1,800 (parts only)

You Save: ₹600-₹1,200 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run ₹800-₹1,500/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
