🔧 Highlander - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Highlander’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps reduce odors, improves airflow, and can prevent the blower fan from working harder than it should.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key fob from the vehicle.
  • ⚠️ Open the glove box slowly; contents can spill.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and clear the glove box

  • Open the glove box and remove any items inside.
  • Use a flashlight to look along the right side of the glove box for a small “damper” arm (a little strut that slows the glove box).

Step 2: Detach the glove box damper arm

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin on the glove box (it’s a press-fit).
  • Go slow to avoid snapping the clip.

Step 3: Lower the glove box

  • Push the glove box sides inward by hand (near the top edges) so the “stops” clear the dashboard opening.
  • Lower the glove box down toward the floor to expose the cabin filter access area behind it.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the rectangular cabin filter housing cover.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter housing cover

  • Press the tabs on the cabin filter cover (usually left/right tabs) and pull the cover straight off by hand.
  • Set the cover aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin filter

  • Slide the old filter straight out of the housing by hand.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris inside the housing.
  • If needed, wipe the opening carefully with a gloved hand using nitrile gloves. Don’t poke deep into the blower fan.

Step 6: Install the new cabin filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the side of the new filter.
  • Install it with the arrow pointing DOWN (toward the floor), matching the typical Highlander filter housing airflow direction.
  • Slide it in squarely so it doesn’t fold or catch.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by hand until both tabs click in.
  • Lift the glove box back up, then push the sides inward again to get the stops past the opening.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its pin (you should feel it snap on).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on medium, then high, to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculation and listen for any unusual noise behind the glove box.
  • If you notice a whistling sound, recheck that the filter is fully seated and the cover is clipped in evenly.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$150 (parts + labor)
