🔧 Lancer - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air that comes through your A/C and heater vents. Replacing it helps improve airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the glovebox area.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can crack if bent too far.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Plastic trim removal tool set
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Have a flashlight ready under the glovebox.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Empty and open the glovebox

  • Remove everything from the glovebox by hand so nothing falls out.
  • Open the glovebox fully and use a flashlight to look at the right side.

Step 2: Disconnect the glovebox damper

  • On the right side of the glovebox, locate the small “damper” arm (it slows the glovebox when it opens).
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to gently pop the damper arm off its pin.
  • Gentle pry only—no twisting hard.

Step 3: Release the glovebox stops and lower it

  • Use both hands to squeeze the glovebox sides inward to clear the side “stops” (tabs that prevent it from dropping).
  • If a stop is tight, use a plastic trim removal tool set to help guide the tab past the dash opening.
  • Let the glovebox swing down carefully.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the lowered glovebox, find the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool set to press the locking tabs and pull the cover off.
  • If your cover uses screws on your A/C case, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 5: Pull out the old cabin filter

  • Wear nitrile gloves and slide the old filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris inside the housing.
  • If needed, wipe the opening with a dry shop towel (use the nitrile gloves).

Step 6: Install the new cabin filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (the arrow must match airflow direction shown on the housing/cover).
  • Slide it in evenly—don’t crush or fold the filter.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glovebox

  • Reinstall the access cover until the tabs click in place, using a plastic trim removal tool set to help align if needed.
  • If screws were removed, reinstall with a Phillips #2 screwdriver (snug only; do not overtighten).
  • Lift the glovebox back up and push the sides inward by hand to re-seat the stops.
  • Reconnect the damper arm using the plastic trim removal tool set to guide it onto the pin.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan on high for 30 seconds.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculate to confirm airflow feels normal.
  • Listen for rattles behind the glovebox; if you hear one, recheck that the filter cover tabs are fully latched.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost
