🔧 Civic - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Civic’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the heater and A/C. Replacing it helps reduce musty smells, improves airflow, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic tabs; they can snap if forced.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Clean nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Flashlight
  • Phillips #2 screwdriver
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more working room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and release the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and support it with one hand.
  • On the right side, disconnect the glove box “damper” arm (the small slow-down strap). Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry it off its pin. A damper is a small arm that prevents the glove box from dropping fast.

Step 2: Drop the glove box down

  • Press inward on both sides of the glove box to clear the built-in stop tabs.
  • Let the glove box swing downward toward the floor.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter access cover

  • Behind the glove box, locate the rectangular cabin filter housing.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand (or gently with the trim removal tool (plastic)) and pull the cover straight off.
  • If your cover uses screws on your trim, remove them with a Phillips #2 screwdriver.

Step 4: Pull out the old filter

  • Slide the filter tray/filter straight out toward you.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust.
  • Tip: Pull slowly to prevent a debris shower.

Step 5: Install the new cabin filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the side of the new filter.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (typically AIR FLOW arrow pointing down on this Civic).
  • Slide the filter fully back into the housing until it seats evenly.

Step 6: Reassemble the glove box

  • Reinstall the cabin filter cover by pushing it on until the tabs click (or reinstall screws with a Phillips #2 screwdriver).
  • Lift the glove box back up and press the sides inward again to pass the stop tabs back into place.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pushing it back onto its pin by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan on all speeds to confirm good airflow.
  • Turn A/C on and sniff for musty odors; a new filter often helps right away.
  • If airflow is still weak, the filter may be installed backwards or not fully seated.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.5 hours.
