🔧 Tundra - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Tundra’s cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC (heat/AC) vents. Replacing it helps airflow, reduces dust/pollen, and can eliminate musty odors.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Avoid breathing dust from the old filter; wear a mask if it’s very dirty.
  • ⚠️ Do not force plastic tabs; they can crack in cold weather.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flashlight
  • Trim removal tool (plastic)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move any items out of the glove box so nothing falls behind the dash.
  • Take a quick photo before removal.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully and remove manuals and loose items by hand.
  • Use a small flashlight to look at the right side of the glove box for the small “damper” arm (a slow-open strap).

Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm

  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pry the damper arm off its peg on the glove box (it pops off).
  • Go slow—this clip is easy to snap.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Press inward on both sides of the glove box (near the top) with your hands to clear the side stops.
  • Let the glove box swing downward toward the floor.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Behind the glove box opening, locate the rectangular cabin filter cover.
  • Release the cover tabs by hand (or use the trim removal tool (plastic) gently) and remove the cover.

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter straight out by hand.
  • Keep it level to avoid dumping leaves and dust into the blower area.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one (typically AIR FLOW arrow points down toward the floor on this setup).
  • Slide the filter in until it seats fully—no bending or forcing.

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the access door by hand until the tabs click into place.
  • Lift the glove box back up and press inward on both sides to pass the side stops back into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm by pressing it back onto its peg by hand.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan at all speeds to confirm strong airflow and no rattles.
  • Switch between fresh air and recirculate to confirm the glove box area stays quiet.
  • If there’s a musty smell, run A/C 5 minutes.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $70-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$40 (parts only)

You Save: $55-$100 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
