🔧 Camry - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working near the passenger airbag area (behind the glove box).
- ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can snap if bent too far.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:

- Have a flashlight ready.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Empty and open the glove box
- Remove items from the glove box so nothing falls out.
- Open the glove box all the way.
- Use a flashlight to see the right-side damper arm (the small “soft-open” piece).
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper
- On the right side of the glove box, locate the small damper arm.
- Use your hands (wear nitrile gloves) to gently pop the damper arm off its pin.
- Pull straight outward, not upward.
Step 3: Drop the glove box down
- Push in on both sides of the glove box to clear the side “stops” (the plastic ears that limit how far it opens).
- Let the glove box swing down toward the floor.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door
- Behind the glove box, find the rectangular filter housing.
- Use your hands to press the tabs on the access door and pull the door off.
- Use the flashlight to confirm the tabs are fully released before pulling.
Step 5: Remove the old filter
- Slide the old filter straight out of the housing.
- Keep it level so debris doesn’t spill into the blower area.
Step 6: Install the new filter (correct direction)
- Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
- Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor) for the Camry.
- Slide it in fully so it sits flat and doesn’t buckle.
Step 7: Reassemble the glove box
- Reinstall the filter access door by snapping it back into place by hand.
- Lift the glove box back up and push the sides in again to pass the stops.
- Reconnect the damper arm on the right side by pressing it back onto its pin.
✅ After Repair
- Start the car and run the fan on medium to confirm airflow is strong and sounds normal.
- Turn on A/C and heat briefly to confirm no rattles (a loose access door can buzz).
- If it whistles, re-seat the filter.
