🔧 CR-V - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your CR-V’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the A/C and heater (dust, pollen, smells). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and can make the A/C work better.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Don’t force plastic tabs; they can crack if bent too far.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Phillips screwdriver #2
  • Trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself space.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and unhook the glove box damper

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • On the right side of the glove box, find the small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap that slows the glove box). It looks like a small plastic link.
  • Use a trim removal tool (plastic) (specialty) to gently pop the damper arm off its peg.

Step 2: Drop the glove box down

  • Use your hands to push the glove box sides inward (near the upper left and upper right) to clear the stop tabs.
  • Let the glove box swing downward toward the floor.

Step 3: Remove the cabin filter door

  • Behind the glove box you’ll see a rectangular cabin filter housing door.
  • Use your fingers to pinch the two side tabs on the door and pull it straight off.
  • Use a flashlight if you need help seeing the tabs clearly.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Slide the filter tray/filter straight out toward you.
  • Keep it level so loose leaves and dust don’t dump into the blower housing.
  • Tip: Pull slowly to avoid spilling debris.

Step 5: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Check the new filter for an “AIR FLOW” arrow.
  • Install it with the arrow pointing down (toward the floor). This matches airflow direction on your CR-V.
  • Slide the filter fully in until it seats evenly.

Step 6: Reinstall the filter door and glove box

  • Reinstall the housing door and push until both side tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up and push the sides inward again to get past the stop tabs.
  • Reconnect the damper arm on the right side (press it back onto its peg by hand).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the fan on all speeds to confirm good airflow and no rattles.
  • If you hear a ticking noise, the filter may not be seated flat—reopen and reseat it.
  • Plan to replace the cabin filter about every 12 months or sooner in dusty conditions.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$105 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
