🔧 CR-V - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
This job replaces the cabin air filter that cleans the air coming through the vents in your CR-V. A fresh filter helps your AC and heater work better and keeps dust and smells down inside the cabin.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-25 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- 🔹Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before starting.
- 🔹Do not run the blower fan while the cabin filter is removed.
- 🔹Empty the glove box first so nothing falls out while you work.
- 🔹Work gently with the glove box sides and plastic tabs so they don’t crack.
- 🔹Battery disconnect is not required for this job.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- 🔹Work light or flashlight

📋 Before You Begin
- 🔹Park your CR-V on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- 🔹Turn off the engine, AC, heater, and blower fan.
- 🔹Open the passenger door fully for good access to the glove box.
- 🔹Remove everything from the glove box (manual, papers, etc.).
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and support the glove box
- 🔹Sit in the passenger seat and use your hand to open the glove box fully.
- 🔹Use your work light or flashlight to see the right side of the glove box inside the dash.
Step 2: Detach the glove box damper arm
- 🔹On the right side of the glove box, find a small plastic arm connected to the box. This is the damper arm that controls how fast the glove box falls.
- 🔹Hold the glove box slightly up with one hand so there is no tension on the arm.
- 🔹With your other hand, gently pull the plastic damper arm straight off the small pin on the glove box.
- Wiggle gently; don’t force it hard.
Step 3: Drop the glove box to access the filter area
- 🔹On both sides of the glove box there are plastic “stops” that rest against the dash to keep it from falling down.
- 🔹With the glove box open, push the right side of the glove box inward with your hand to clear the stop past the dash opening.
- 🔹Then push the left side of the glove box inward the same way.
- 🔹Once both sides are pushed in, let the glove box swing down and hang lower, exposing the area behind it.
- You’ll now see a rectangular black plastic cover: the cabin filter door.
Step 4: Remove the cabin filter cover
- 🔹Use your work light or flashlight to clearly see the rectangular cover directly behind the dropped glove box.
- 🔹On each side of the cover there is a small plastic tab or clip.
- 🔹Squeeze the tabs toward the center with your fingers and pull the cover straight out toward you.
- Pull slowly so you don’t break the tabs.
Step 5: Slide out the old cabin filter
- 🔹Grasp the old filter by its front edge and slide it straight out.
- 🔹Note the direction of the airflow arrow printed on the side of the old filter (usually pointing down in your CR-V).
- 🔹If a lot of leaves or debris fall, use your gloved hand to gently scoop them out of the filter slot.
- Remember the arrow direction; you’ll match it on the new filter.
Step 6: Clean the filter housing (optional but recommended)
- 🔹With the filter out, look inside the opening using your work light or flashlight.
- 🔹Use your gloved fingers to gently remove any visible leaves or big dirt pieces from the housing.
- 🔹If you have a small vacuum (not required), you can carefully vacuum the area, but do not poke hard plastic pieces.
Step 7: Install the new cabin filter
- 🔹Find the airflow arrow printed on the side of the new filter.
- 🔹On your CR-V, the arrow should point down (toward the floor), matching how the old filter was installed.
- 🔹Gently slide the new filter into the slot, keeping it level. Do not crush or fold it.
- 🔹Push it in until it is fully seated and flush with the housing.
- If it jams, pull back, straighten, and try again.
Step 8: Reinstall the cabin filter cover
- 🔹Align the cover with the opening in the housing.
- 🔹Slide or push it straight in until both side tabs click into place.
- 🔹Lightly tug the cover to make sure it is locked and does not come off easily.
Step 9: Raise and reattach the glove box
- 🔹Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
- 🔹Push the left side of the glove box inward again to get the side past the dash opening, then let it rest on its stop.
- 🔹Repeat on the right side so both side stops are resting inside the dash opening as before.
Step 10: Reconnect the glove box damper arm
- 🔹Hold the glove box slightly up with one hand so the right-side damper arm lines up with its mounting pin.
- 🔹Push the damper arm back onto the pin until it clicks into place.
- 🔹Open and close the glove box a couple of times to confirm it moves smoothly and doesn’t drop suddenly.
Step 11: Reload the glove box
- 🔹Put your owner’s manual and other items back into the glove box.
- 🔹Do not overfill it so the door can still close easily.
✅ After Repair
- 🔹Start the engine, turn on the blower fan, and switch between fresh air and recirculation to confirm airflow feels normal.
- 🔹Turn on the AC and heater to make sure there are no unusual noises from the dash area.
- 🔹You may notice cleaner-smelling air after a short drive.
- 🔹Plan to replace the cabin filter about once a year, or more often in dusty areas.
