🔧 Acadia - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your Acadia’s cabin air filter cleans the air going through the HVAC system (heat/AC). Replacing it helps airflow, reduces odors, and keeps dust/pollen out of the cabin.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-30 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Use gentle pressure on plastic tabs; they can crack if forced.
  • ⚠️ Keep loose items away from the blower opening so nothing falls inside.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Plastic trim removal tool
  • 7mm socket
  • 1/4" drive ratchet
  • 6" socket extension
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the front passenger seat back to give yourself working room.
  • Tip: Have a trash bag ready for leaves/dust.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Access the cabin filter area

  • Open the front passenger door and kneel by the glove box area.
  • Use a flashlight to look under/behind the glove box for a small access cover (this is the cabin filter door).
  • Tip: The filter is typically behind the glove box.

Step 2: Remove the lower hush panel (if equipped)

  • If there is a plastic panel under the glove box blocking access, remove its fasteners with a 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension.
  • Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pop any clips loose.
  • Set the panel and screws aside where you won’t lose them.

Step 3: Lower or remove the glove box (common on this Acadia)

  • Open the glove box.
  • On the right side, unhook the small dampener arm (a little strap/arm that slows the glove box). Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry it off its peg if needed.
  • Squeeze the glove box sides inward by hand to clear the stop tabs, then let the glove box swing down.
  • Tip: Squeeze slowly—plastic tabs can snap.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter door

  • Locate the rectangular filter access door behind the glove box.
  • Press the locking tabs and pull the door off by hand. If it’s tight, use a plastic trim removal tool to help—don’t use a metal screwdriver (it gouges plastic).

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Slide the filter straight out by hand.
  • Keep it level as you remove it to avoid dumping debris.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame (it will say AIR FLOW).
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (the arrow direction matters for performance and noise).
  • Slide it fully into the housing so it seats flat.

Step 7: Reassemble

  • Reinstall the filter access door by hand until it clicks.
  • Raise the glove box back up and re-engage the stop tabs by squeezing the sides inward again.
  • Reattach the dampener arm by hand.
  • If you removed the lower hush panel, reinstall it using the 7mm socket, 1/4" drive ratchet, and 6" socket extension until snug (do not over-tighten; it’s plastic).

âś… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the HVAC blower on medium, then high.
  • Make sure airflow feels stronger and there are no new rattles behind the glove box.
  • If you hear a “flutter” noise, the filter may not be fully seated—recheck the access door and filter position.

đź’° DIY vs Shop Cost
