š§ Suburban - Cabin Air Filter Replacement
On your Suburban, many trucks did not come with a factory-installed cabin air filter, but the HVAC box often has a provision behind the glove box. First youāll check if the filter access door is already there; if not, you can install a retrofit filter + cover kit.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 15-90 minutes
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the passenger airbag area.
- ā ļø Empty the glove box so nothing falls and distracts you.
- ā ļø If you cut the HVAC case opening (retrofit), wear eye protection and cut slowly to avoid damaging the evaporator core (the cold A/C radiator) behind the plastic.
- ā ļø Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

š Before You Begin
- š§° Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- š§° Move the passenger seat back for more working room.

šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Drop the glove box down
- Use your hands to open the glove box and empty it.
- Use your hands to gently push in on both sides of the glove box to release the stops, then let it swing down.
- If thereās a small damper strap/arm on the right side, use a trim panel tool or flat-blade screwdriver to carefully pop it off its pin.
Step 2: Find the cabin filter location
- Use a flashlight to look behind the glove box at the HVAC box (large black plastic housing).
- Look for a rectangular filter access door/plate with tabs near the top/center area.
- If you see a door, skip to Step 3.
Step 3: If equipped: remove the access door
- Use a flat-blade screwdriver to help release the locking tabs (if tight), then remove the cover by hand.
- Use nitrile gloves and pull the cabin air filter straight out.
- Use a shop vacuum to gently vacuum loose leaves/dust from the opening.
Step 4: If NOT equipped: create the opening (retrofit)
- Use a flashlight to find the molded āoutlineā on the HVAC box where the filter opening is intended to be.
- Use safety glasses and a utility knife with new blade to carefully cut along the outline.
- Cut shallow passes (donāt stab deep). The evaporator core is directly behind this area and can be damaged.
- Use a shop vacuum to remove plastic shavings and debris.
Step 5: Install the new cabin air filter
- Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
- Install the filter in the same direction the old one came out. If there was no old filter, set the arrow to point toward the rear of the truck (toward the cabin) as you slide it into the HVAC box.
- Slide it in evenly so it doesnāt fold or bind.
Step 6: Install the cover (or retrofit door)
- If you had an original cover, reinstall it by hand until the tabs click.
- If you did the retrofit opening, install the cabin air filter access door cover kit and make sure it fully seals and latches.
Step 7: Reinstall the glove box
- If you removed the damper strap/arm, reattach it by hand (use a trim panel tool if needed).
- Use your hands to push in the glove box sides again and lift it back past the stops so it closes normally.
ā After Repair
- ā Start the engine and run the blower on high for 30 seconds to confirm good airflow and no rubbing noises.
- ā Turn A/C on and make sure thereās no unusual whistling (a sign the cover isnāt sealed).
- ā Recheck the glove box opens/closes smoothly.
š° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $120-$250 (parts + labor)
DIY Cost: $20-$80 (parts only, depending on whether you need the retrofit door)
