🔧 Altima - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your A/C and heater pull air through a cabin air filter. Replacing it helps improve airflow, reduce dust/pollen inside the cabin, and can reduce blower noise.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the car OFF and remove the key/fob from the cabin before working under the dash.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on any yellow/orange wiring connectors (hybrid/high-voltage related).
  • ⚠️ Use light pressure on plastic tabs; they can snap if forced.
  • Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Trim panel removal tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and make sure the car is fully OFF.
  • Slide the front passenger seat back for working room.
  • Have your new cabin filter ready and note the airflow arrow on the filter frame.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and empty the glove box

  • Use nitrile gloves to protect your hands from dust and sharp plastic edges.
  • Use a flashlight to see the glove box sides and stops clearly.

Step 2: Release the glove box damper arm

  • On the right side of the glove box, locate the small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap that slows the glove box).
  • Use a trim panel removal tool (plastic) to gently pop the damper arm off its peg. Go slow; it’s easy to crack.
  • If it’s stubborn, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to carefully lift the locking edge.

Step 3: Drop the glove box down

  • Push the glove box sides inward to clear the side “stops,” then let the glove box swing downward.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the cabin filter access door behind the glove box.

Step 4: Remove the cabin filter access door

  • Find the rectangular filter cover (usually has tabs on the sides).
  • Use a trim panel removal tool (plastic) to press the tabs and pull the cover off.
  • If needed, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to help start one tab (gentle pressure only).

Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Use nitrile gloves and pull the filter straight out.
  • Use a flashlight to check for leaves/debris inside the filter housing.
  • If debris is present, use the trim panel removal tool (plastic) to lift out larger pieces you can reach.

Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Compare the new filter to the old one for size and shape.
  • Use a flashlight to locate the airflow direction marking on the housing (if present).
  • Slide the new filter in the same direction as the old one, following the airflow arrow on the filter (typically arrow points downward toward the blower).

Step 7: Reinstall the cover and glove box

  • Reinstall the filter cover by hand, then use a trim panel removal tool (plastic) to press around the edges until it clicks fully.
  • Lift the glove box back up into position.
  • Reconnect the damper arm using the trim panel removal tool (plastic) to help align and snap it back onto the peg.

✅ After Repair

  • Start your A/C blower and test all fan speeds; airflow should be stronger and smoother.
  • Listen for clicking/whistling; if present, recheck that the filter cover is fully clipped in.
  • If there’s a musty smell, run the blower on fresh air (not recirc) for a few minutes.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $80-$160 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $65-$125 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.3-0.5 hours.
