🔧 Ridgeline - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

Your cabin air filter cleans the air coming through the vents (A/C and heat). Replacing it helps reduce dust, odors, and weak airflow, and it can keep your HVAC system working efficiently.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.4 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF before working around the glove box and HVAC controls.
  • ⚠️ Handle the glove box gently; forcing it can break the stops or damper.
  • ⚠️ No battery disconnect is required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Trim removal tool (plastic)
  • Flashlight
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Move the passenger seat back for more room.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and release the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully.
  • If your glove box has a small “damper” arm (a little shock/strap on the right side that slows the door), use a trim removal tool (plastic) to gently pop it off its pin. A damper is a small arm that prevents the glove box from dropping quickly.
  • Press the glove box side walls inward by hand to clear the built-in stops, then let the glove box swing down.

Step 2: Remove the cabin filter cover

  • Look behind the glove box for a rectangular access door (the filter cover).
  • Use your fingers or the trim removal tool (plastic) to press the locking tabs and pull the cover straight off.
  • Use a flashlight if needed to see the tabs clearly.

Step 3: Remove the old cabin air filter

  • Pull the filter tray or filter straight out (some come out as one piece).
  • Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses since dust and debris can fall out.
  • Tip: Keep it level to avoid spills.

Step 4: Install the new cabin air filter

  • Check the airflow arrow on the filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (match the arrow direction shown on the housing/filter).
  • Slide the filter fully in until it seats evenly with no gaps.

Step 5: Reinstall the filter cover and glove box

  • Snap the filter cover back on until both tabs click.
  • Lift the glove box back up, press the sides inward again, and guide the stops back into place.
  • If removed, reattach the glove box damper arm by pressing it back onto the pin.

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower fan at different speeds to confirm normal airflow and no rattles.
  • If you notice a musty smell, run the A/C for a few minutes; the new filter may help quickly, but heavy odor can indicate the evaporator case needs cleaning.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$140 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$45 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
