šŸ”§ Tacoma - Cabin Air Filter Replacement

The cabin air filter cleans the air going into your A/C and heater. When it’s dirty, airflow drops and you can get musty smells. On your Tacoma, the filter is located behind the glove box.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working around the dash.
  • āš ļø Don’t force plastic tabs; they can snap in cold weather.
  • āš ļø If you find no filter slot/door, your Tacoma may not be equipped (some trims use a blank cover).

šŸ”§ Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Flashlight

šŸ”© Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Cabin air filter - Qty: 1

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Empty the glove box so nothing falls out.
  • Have your flashlight ready so you can see the filter door clearly.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open and drop the glove box

  • Open the glove box fully using your hands.
  • Use your hands to push the glove box sides inward (this clears the ā€œstopsā€ so the glove box can swing down).
  • If your glove box has a small ā€œdamperā€ arm on the right side, use your hands to gently unhook it. It’s a small slow-close arm.

Step 2: Find the cabin filter access door

  • Use the flashlight to look directly behind where the glove box was—there should be a rectangular access door on the HVAC case.
  • Use your hands to locate the two small locking tabs/clips on the door.

Step 3: Remove the access door

  • Use your hands to pinch the door tabs/clips and pull the door straight off.
  • Set the door aside where it won’t get stepped on.

Step 4: Remove the old filter

  • Use your hands to slide the filter straight out.
  • Keep it level—debris can spill out.

Step 5: Install the new filter (correct direction)

  • Check the airflow arrow on the new filter frame.
  • Install it in the same direction as the old one came out (typically the arrow points down on many Tacomas). If it doesn’t slide easily, flip it.

Step 6: Reinstall the door and glove box

  • Use your hands to reinstall the access door until both tabs click.
  • If equipped, use your hands to reattach the glove box damper arm on the right side.
  • Use your hands to push the glove box sides inward again and lift it back up past the stops.
  • Close the glove box.

āœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and run the blower on medium-high to confirm strong airflow.
  • Switch between A/C and heat to make sure nothing rattles behind the glove box.
  • If you still have a musty odor, run A/C on fresh air for a few minutes to dry the evaporator.

šŸ’° DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: $60-$130 (parts + labor)

DIY Cost: $15-$35 (parts only)

You Save: $45-$95 by doing it yourself!

Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.2-0.4 hours.
