📋 Before You Begin
- 🧭 Park the Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🧭 Turn off the ignition and remove the key.
- 🧭 Make sure the blower fan and A/C are switched off.
- 🧭 Move anything out of the glove box so nothing falls when you lower it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open and unload the glove box
- 🪛 Open the glove box on the passenger side fully.
- 🪛 Remove all items inside so they don’t fall out when it drops down.
- 🪛 Use the flashlight to see the sides and the small arm on the right.
Step 2: Disconnect the glove box damper arm
- 🪛 On the right side of the glove box, locate the small plastic “arm” (damper) that slows the glove box when it opens. A damper is a small device that controls how fast the glove box drops.
- 🪛 Gently push the damper arm toward the rear of the truck with your hand to unhook it from the glove box.
- 🪛 Let the damper arm hang; do not force or bend it hard. Gentle pressure avoids breaking plastic
Step 3: Release the glove box side stops
- 🪛 On both sides of the glove box near the top, you’ll see plastic “stops” that hit the dash and keep the box from falling down.
- 🪛 With one hand on each side of the glove box, gently squeeze the sides inward so the stops clear the dash opening.
- 🪛 Allow the glove box to swing down and hang lower, exposing the white or black rectangular cabin filter access door behind it.
Step 4: Open the cabin filter access door
- 🪛 Use the flashlight to clearly see the filter access door on the HVAC box behind the glove box.
- 🪛 On the door, you’ll find small clips or tabs on each side.
- 🪛 Squeeze or unclip the tabs with your fingers and pull the door straight off toward you. No tools are needed.
Step 5: Remove the old cabin air filter
- 🪛 Grasp the exposed edge of the filter and slide it straight out toward you.
- 🪛 Note the direction of the arrows on the filter (often marked “AIR FLOW”) and how it was installed. This matters when you insert the new one.
- 🪛 Use the shop towel or rag to wipe loose dust from the filter housing if needed. Do not use water inside here
Step 6: Install the new cabin air filter
- 🪛 On the new filter, find the arrow that shows “AIR FLOW”. On your Tacoma, the air flows from top to bottom, so the arrow should point downward when installed.
- 🪛 Carefully slide the new filter into the housing, keeping it square and flat so it does not bend.
- 🪛 Make sure it is fully seated all the way back in the slot.
Step 7: Reinstall the cabin filter access door
- 🪛 Align the access door’s bottom tabs with the slots on the housing.
- 🪛 Swing the top of the door up and press until the side clips snap securely into place.
- 🪛 Tug lightly to confirm it is locked and won’t fall off.
Step 8: Reposition and reattach the glove box
- 🪛 Lift the glove box back up toward its normal position.
- 🪛 Gently squeeze the sides inward again so the side stops move back inside the dash opening, then let go so they rest on the dash frame.
- 🪛 On the right side, reattach the damper arm by sliding its end back onto the pin on the glove box. Push until it clicks into place.
Step 9: Final checks and reload glove box
- 🪛 Open and close the glove box a few times to make sure it moves smoothly and the damper slows it correctly.
- 🪛 Put your items back into the glove box, avoiding overpacking so the box can still close easily.
- 🪛 Start the engine, turn on the fan, and check for normal air flow through the vents. There are no torque specs for this job because no bolts are involved.
✅ After Repair
- 🔁 Run the blower fan on all speeds and check for good air flow and no rattling noises.
- 🔁 Switch between fresh air and recirculation modes and confirm air still flows well.
- 🔁 If you notice a musty smell, use interior cleaner wipes to gently clean the dash vents.
- 🔁 Plan to replace the cabin filter every 12 months or sooner in dusty areas.
